Frank agrees to marry her and Roo tries to accept Alf and Ailsa's marriage. Brett turns up and tells Roo the mumps has left him infertile and that he now wants the baby. She refuses to let him back into her life, so Brett goes to Morag, who tries to talk Roo into changing her mind.
James Edmunds returns to the Bay and offers Roo a job as a lecturer at the university. James and Roo try to get married quickly, but their wedding is stopped by Alf who thinks James lied about where he used to work. Roo later discovers James is already married with children, and has been lying to her all along. She calls off their engagement, but continues her relationship with him. After James confesses to Roo that he also lied to her about his parents being alive, she finally breaks up with him. Roo decides to take a break from the Bay and when she returns, she reveals that she has a new boyfriend, David Lee .

Roo bonds with Lottie and agrees that she can move in with her and Harvey, when Mel goes to the city. Lottie and Mel eventually leave the Bay and Harvey asks Roo to marry him. Roo's ex-boyfriend, Tim , comes to the Bay and tries to win Roo back. Harvey and Roo marry and they take in teen runaways Maddy Osborne and Spencer Harrington . Harvey sails around the world with his best friend, Winston Markman .
Lewis gets a transfer to Northern Districts to work alongside Jasmine. Lewis reads a patient's file and tells Jasmine that he is checking that Christian has not made any mistakes, as he is a danger to his patients. When she developed a secondary brain bleed, Christian could not be contacted and Anna later died. Following a second date, Owen and Roo kiss and their relationship progresses quickly.

Roo initially tries to keep the relationship a secret due to the age gap between them, but Morag soon catches them together. Roo faints and is convinced by Morag that she is going through the menopause. James tells Roo that he does not want children and asks her to have an abortion, but she refuses and decides to the raise the child as a single parent. James's father David Mayvers offers Roo $250,000 with the condition that she or her child does not contact James. Nate and Tori Morgan find her and diagnose a ruptured ectopic pregnancy.
A TV Soap columnist wrote that when Ryder's mother Quinn Jackson made an appearance three years ago, she said she had a brief relationship with Ryder's father when they worked as musicians on a cruise ship. After learning Quinn was pregnant, he wanted to settle down with her on the Gold Coast, but he did not follow through with that plan, leaving Quinn to raise Ryder alone. This leads Alf to give Evan a "less-than-pleasant welcome", prompting him to almost leave Summer Bay.
Characterisation
Christian Green, played by Ditch Davey, made his first appearance on 16 September 2020. The character and Davey's casting details were announced on 19 June 2020. Later casting details confirmed that the character is a neurosurgeon, who comes to Northern Districts Hospital to consult on Justin Morgan's spinal tumour diagnosis. He is also a love interest for Justin's sister and fellow doctor Tori Morgan . In September 2021, it was confirmed Davey and McNamee would be leaving Home and Away that same month, as their characters marry and relocate to London. When Roo visits her brother Duncan in Hawaii, she meets James Mayvers and they begin a relationship.
Roo leaves town to try and find Martha, but she is unsuccessful and returns home. When Colleen has an accident, Roo flies to Las Vegas to care for her. She is diagnosed with meningitis and has to have fluid removed from her brain, but she shows no improvement. Nate Cooper discovers growths on her brain and her family learn that Roo went to Peru, where she had suffered a reaction to her inoculations. At the reception, she is informed that Maddy has stolen her credit card to buy clothes.
Marco admits to Ziggy that he always loved Maggie and hoped that it was all over between her and Ben, but they got back together, married and nine months later Ziggy was born. Ben also realises that Maggie and Marco were arguing about their secret on the night he was arrested for assaulting Marco. Ben suggests that they take a paternity test, so Ziggy knows for sure who her father is. Marco returns on the day the results, which confirm Ben is Ziggy's father. Maggie says that she regrets their night together and for not telling Ben the truth sooner, which prompts Marco to admit that he loves her.
Roo begins to resent her father's relationship with Ailsa Hogan out of loyalty to her late mother, Martha . Roo begins dating Frank Morgan and they start a band with Lance Smart and Martin Dibble . Roo's continued obsession with Ailsa drives a rift between her and Frank, despite nearly sleeping with him as an act of rebellion over Ailsa staying over.
Following the birth, Roo decides to have her daughter adopted out. This marked a temporary two-week departure for the character, as she goes to the city to make arrangements off-screen. For Roo's return, producers created "a new, glamorous and confident" look for her. Clarke said Roo is trying to be nice, but no one believes or trusts her, which Clarke thought was understandable given Roo's history. Clarke also revealed that the reason Roo is so accepting of Frank and Bobby's engagement is that she has a new love interest, whose identity was initially kept a secret.
Gina runs a credit check on Roo and discovers that she is broke. Roo advises Alf to get a lawyer when rumours begin to circulate that he killed Penn Graham . Gina gets Roo to take a job with John Palmer , who pays her with Hugo's money. Roo attends Bianca Scott's bridal shower and wedding, before leaving for the States. Alf and Tom Fletcher go missing on a fishing trip and Ailsa goes into premature labour.
